Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts Engineering Service Exam also known as Indian Engineering Service (IES) examination every year for the recruitment under the post of Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering. Notification of the examination is released between January/February month every year and the exam is held in June/July month at centers across India. In ESE Exam, there are objective as well as conventional (descriptive) papers. One paper for GA (General Ability) is part of the assessment system apart from the engineering subject of the candidate. The entire technical subject is divided into four papers (Papers II, III, IV & V). There is negative marking penalty on wrong answers. There is a three-day schedule of the written examination, comprising all five written examinations. ESE is considered as the toughest exam in India and among the toughest in the world due to less number of posts. Group of posts which come under individual categories are as follows:

UPSC IES Eligibility Criteria: Candidates must fulfill following eligibility criteria to apply for IES posts-
Age Limits: Candidate must be between the age of 21 to 30 years at the time of applying.
Education Qualification: Candidate must have a degree in Engineering from a University incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or declared to be deemed as Universities under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act.
– Candidate who has appeared at an examination the passing of which would render him educationally qualified for this examination, but has not been informed of the result, may apply for admission to the examination i.e. Final year candidates can apply.

UPSC Indian Engineering Service (IES) Examination Pattern: UPSC IES Exam selection process consist of two main parts i.e. written exam followed by personality test carrying a maximum of 200 marks.

UPSC IES Written Examination Pattern: IES Written Examination comprise of two sections—Section I consists only of objective types of questions and Section II of conventional papers. Both Sections covers the entire syllabus of the relevant engineering disciplines i.e. Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical, Engineering and Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering. NOTE: Candidates have to appear only in their relative discipline Engineering exam Paper I and Paper II in both the sections(Objective Papers / Conventional Papers).
– Conventional papers must be answered in English. Question papers will be set in English only.
– Deduction upto 5 per cent of the maximum marks for the written papers will be made for illegible handwriting.
– Negative Marking will be done for wrong answers marked by a candidate in the Objective Type Question Papers.

UPSC IES Personality Test Pattern: Personality Test will be of 200 marks. During the personality test special attention will be paid to assessing the candidate’s capacity for leadership, initiative and intellectual curiosity, tact and other social qualities, mental and physical energy, powers of practical application and integrity of character.

UPSC Indian Engineering Service (IES) Exam Syllabus: The standard of paper in General Ability Test will be such as may be expected of an Engineering/Science Graduate. The standard of papers in other subjects will approximately be that of an Engineering Degree Examination of an Indian University. There will be no practical examination in any of the subjects.

GENERAL ABILITY TEST
Part A: General English. The question paper in General English will be designed to test the candidate’s understanding of English and workmanlike use of words.
Part B: General Studies: The paper in General Studies will include knowledge of current events and of such matters as of everyday observation and experience in their scientific aspects as may be expected of an educated person. The paper will also include questions on History of India and Geography of a nature which candidates should be able to answer without special study.
